Theater of Waiting

Theater of Waiting

Advent
asks us
to wait.
I wait indoors.
(It’s dangerously cold outside.)
Spontaneously
this Sunday night
I make our dinner table
a theater of waiting.

Quietly it stands
smack dab in the traffic
where we live.
I see table-scape
from the front door,
the kitchen,
the family room,
the study.
It never leaves
home.

The stage is set:
One table.
Two plates.
Two goblets filled with water.
For the next 31 days,
day and night,
their untampered presence
woos me
to wait
expectantly
for the promised hope
of Christ the Messiah.

  1. A beautiful and real reminder of our Advent waiting. I guess you and Roger are relegated to the kitchen counter now!
